WomEmpowered International has hosted the fourth session of ‘Period rediscovered.’ a six-part discussion series about menstruation. This event focused on lifestyle and menstruation, and started with a brief presentation by our advisor Dr. Sonia Tsukagoshi followed by a Q&A segment. Dr. Tsukagoshi talked about what can affect our periods such as diet, exercise, stress management, sleep, and substance use. We learnt that these can affect our PMS too (more information about PMS is available on the slides which are linked below). Several of Dr. Tsukagoshi’s main points were:
Don’t panic if you have some irregularity in your period. If you are worried, it’s a good idea to take a pregnancy test and an STI test, as they can both affect your period, often more so than other factors such as diet and exercise. And of course, it’s always okay to see your doctor about these concerns.
Try to maintain a healthy lifestyle. This means taking moderate exercise, eating a healthy diet, managing stress, and getting adequate sleep. However, don’t be too hard on yourself — we are all human. Dr. Tsukagoshi suggested the 80/20 rule; as long as you are keeping a healthy lifestyle for roughly 80% of the time, it’s okay to indulge the rest of the time :)
The Q&A session covered a wide variety of topics such as diet, period irregularity and exercise. If you are interested in learning more, please see the infographic below which compiles what we discovered from the session. You can also view the slides used during the session here.
